It was only four years ago that the Quality Hill compound was considered at the outer edge of Kampala town. Now, with the growth of the city and expansion toward Lake Victoria Quality Hill is nestled quite comfortably between Nsambya and Kabalagala – just past the American Embassy on Gaba Road.
The Quality Hill Centre consists of a number of different ‘businesses’ but all are owned and operated by the same owners who bring a European (Belgian) feel to the place. There is Le Chateau – the upscale restaurant. La Patisserie – the coffee shop and bakery. Quality Cuts –the charcuterie (butchery) and cheese shop with its small vegetable stall attached. The Cellar – the wine shop. Also a crafts store selling mainly Congolese carving and masks, a pharmacy and a bank. And, tucked back in the far corner and only observable to those who know it is there, Le Petit Village – the hotel.
Le Petit Village is the definitive boutique hotel in Kampala with only 12 rooms. It’s the perfect place to spend a weekend ‘away’ even if you can’t afford to leave Kampala. Once you pass through the reception doors the sounds of traffic on Gaba Road are gone and all that’s left is the twittering of the birds in the high shrubs as they come and dip in the swimming pool. The staff specialise in making you feel at home which is part of the reason they have so much repeat business. And, with apartments available, it’s not unusual for business people to stay weeks at a time. Staff are also incredibly helpful with special requests such as advice on where to go, what to do or if you need a taxi or airport transfer.
All of the rooms are of open design and layout with high, thatched roof ceilings. The interior decor is described as ‘safari chic’ but is thoughtfully and carefully done without a hint of kitsch. The en suite bathrooms are large and also designed to not block the flow of the room’s architecture with gorgeous rain showers. Amenities are numerous and come standard in all rooms including – king-sized beds, air conditioning, flat screen TVs with DSTV, refrigerators, free WIFI and a small terrace.
The prices are slightly above your standard downtown hotel rate but then again Le Petit Village has so much repeat business that getting a room a time can be difficult and it’s necessary to plan in advance. Junior suites are $165 USD per night. Suites are $150 USD and Executive Suites/Apartments are $185 USD.
If you’re interested in getting away from it all Le Petit Village is the perfect place for a weekend visit. You can have coffee and croissant at Le Patisserie, while away your days by the pool or on your veranda and dine at Le Chateau in the evening – all without ever leaving the compound. Parking is ample in a guarded lot. Or, if you’re looking for a place for a romantic weekend away, or to spend the first nights of your honeymoon before whisking out of town this is the place!
